TAMPA, Florida -- The first team to secure a spot in the Major Arena Soccer League Women playoffs March 20-22 in Detroit is the ICT Aztecs, with the Louisville Triumph close to doing the same following Week 12 action in the league.
The Aztecs, who were 9-1 last year, are 8-0 this year and can't be caught in the Heartland Division, meaning they are already through to the post-season. Each of the five division winners will earn berths, along with three wild card teams. Detroit is guaranteed a spot as host, so if they don't earn their way in, only the two best second place finishers in a division would advance.
Louisville, idle in MASL W action this past weekend, will likely qualify, but they could end any suspense with a road win March 8 in Cincinnati.
The biggest matchup of the weekend came in Mexico, where Dallas RPFC and Atletico Monterrey split a pair of games. The top two teams in the Division -- Dallas is on top at 6-1 while Monterrey is now 5-2 -- will do it again, twice, this weekend in suburban Dallas in their continuing battle for the top of the table.
In addition Week 12 action, Tulsa continued their good run with a win over the Side FC OKC Cyclones and the Columbus Eagles handled the Youngstown Nighthawks. Also, Omaha dispatched the KS Astras and the Houston Bolt finished their season at .500 with a win against Austin 512 FC.
Beyond the RPFC/Monterrey showdowns this coming weekend, Week 13 will feature an important rematch between the Omaha Queens and KS Astras and the return of playoff contending FC Berlin on the road to take on Susserfuss Ballverein. In fact, it's the busiest weekend in the history of MASL W with no less than 13 games on the schedule.
