Houston's Space City FC ready to launch for upcoming 2026-27 MASL W season

TAMPA, Florida – When Houston's newest entry into Major Arena Soccer League Women takes to the field late this fall, there won't be much of a learning curve needed.

That's because Space City FC has already been playing together much of the last two seasons. SCFC is the reconstitution of the former Houston Bolt team which played in both 2024-25 and 2025-26. 

In fact, Alexis Fowlkes, who played last year for the Bolt, says she expects more than a dozen Bolt players – along with a influx of some new talent – to make up the Space City roster in 2026-27.

“We want to create an environment where we know we can thrive because we have really good players. So getting the right people involved will allow us to do some really good things,” Fowlkes said. 

The club will continue to play its home games at MAYA Indoor, and will kick off their 10-game regular season late this fall. Houston Indoor Club is a second team in the metropolitan area as well. 

“At the end of last season, some of us got together we just started going to work. We've been working basically since February and are excited to already have found a great group of sponsors and supporters,” she added. “So, we were like, 'OK, we're ready to go.' We've got a good chunk of girls who were involved with the Bolt, and everyone has been really excited with the evolution. We love playing together.  It's a player oriented thing that's getting it done.”

MASL W Commissioner Chris Economides said the team's past experiences will be something positive to build on this year.

“Alexis and her fellow players have taken the bull by the horns and anytime players become that invested in a club's success it can be nothing but good for the team and the league,” Economides said. “I applaud their dedication to the city and the sport, and know they will have a great run there.”

The team's name is an homage to its home city of Houston, which is home to the Johnson Space Center which actually serves as NASA's command post for human spaceflight. It was originally created in 1961, and helped serve as inspiration for some of the city's other pro teams, including the Rockets (NBA) and Astros (MLB).

Space City FC will play in the very tough South division, where as the Bolt they posted respectable 5-5 seasons each of the past two years. The division includes two playoff teams from last year – Dallas RPFC and Texas Lone Star – and has also featured strong Mexican teams from both Chihuahua and Monterrey along the way.
